The Artist vs. Capitalism

Let the music be yours.

From the moment it arrives in your head, like an aimless butterfly, smile with the knowledge that it is for you. If you had not been looking in its direction at that exact moment, no one would have seen it. No one would have heard its beguiling melody, nor its off-kilter rhythms, nor its alluringly mysterious atmosphere. Or maybe they would have heard it, but its genius would be lost on them.

So let it be yours.

Do not subject it to theoretical eye rolls, or to imaginary raised eyebrows, or to ravenous dollar-sign pupils, or the cruel gaze of public opinion, or the ruthless scrutiny of the critics, or the blank stares of the terminally distracted. Turn away from all of these in your mind, close your eyes, and listen.

Let it be yours.

Let it be yours forever, I say, if that’s what it takes for you, the only one who hears, to revel in the fullness of this moment.
